Signs of soil degradation were noted quite soon after the first European settlement in Victoria. Settlers' letters in the 1840s and 1850s comment on the loss of grass and the beginning of soil erosion in many areas. However it was not until 1917 that the first officail steps were taken to study soil erosion with the establishment of the Erosion Enquiry Committee. The book documents the subsequent development of various government measures and bodies to control erosion and to encourage soil conservation."
