Schlagintweit-Sakünlünski, Hermann Von
Volume 1 of 4. Marbled boards with brown vinyl spine. The book was in a sorry state and has been professionally rebound, but it still has issues. The spine strip is chipped head and tail and there is a horizontal mark toward the head where the title strip has fallen off; the edges are chipped as is the head of the front board. Along the edges, inner and outer, the marbling cover has disappeared exposing the cardboard beneath, and indeed both boards are badly rubbed. Pages X, 370 and 568 had been reinforced with masking tape, page 1 with clear tape. The tape has gone, but the staining along the hinge remains. The title page is also stained along the inner edge. Page 568 has a loose tear at the head, which does not affect the print. The "Druckfehler" page has a stain along the edge with what looks like glue. The edges of the pages have tanned and some pages have been dog-eared. It belonged to an ex-circulating Library "Biblioteca Circolante Detken & Rocholl, which I think was based in Naples. A previous owner has written, in Italian, where the book was bought, and in German "Das Leben ist schön." All plates are present, but there is only one map, "Skizze der Fluss-Systeme des Brahmaputra und der Iravadi.", which I am assuming is one of the two listed. This book is not for the squeamish, but for a reader it is still a clean and now solid copy which will outlive us all. Overseas customers please note that this is a heavy book which will attract additional charges. "Reisen in Indien und Hochasien.
