On the title page: "To Derry Many happy returns Best wishes from Derry. The Derry and the previous recipient have been blocked out with a heavy slab of whiteout. The recipient is now "Derry" and the giver, Elsa Chauvel." I have a vision of a book signing that has gone too long, and poor Elsa getting her instructions wrong. Elsa Chauvel was of course the wife of Charles, one of Australia's most important film makers.
