Whatever of Glory: Those of Benalla & District Who Gave Their Lives in the Great War.

Barry, John
293 pages, indexed, maps, list of World War One fallen soldiers from Benalla and District. Additional research by Helen Bromley, Marg Campbell, Greg Kirk, Bronwyn Pity. There is an ownership inscription on the front paste down, the front end paper has been neatly removed, and the tail of the back cover has light remnant staining, probably caused by the removal of the price sticker, else clean, unmarked and solid as though never read."A recent trend has been for local communities to lay claim to 'their' war histories, of war service personnel linked to their town or suburb. Here is an account of those from Benalla in the state's north east who gave their lives during World War I. The town had a population less than 9,000 people before the war, yet more than 1,000 men and 11 women from the district volunteered to serve after the outbreak of war. Of them, around 200, including one woman, would die in battle, from disease or other war-related causes. This meticulously researched book places the Benalla volunteers in the context of their war, the battles fought and their family backgrounds. ( RHSV History News December 2024)
