Incidentally? Vulnerable...Mortal....Centrally Intensely!

Halliday, Brendan
418 pages, possibly signed by the author. "Stoical to the End: Brendan Halliday is in the later stages of motor neurone disease. It has paralysed his voice box, he can't speak. He is in hospital. But he can still write. A Beechworth lawyer by profession, he's a philosopher by nature and, over many years, wrote down his philosophy. One of his close mates is artist and political satirist Tony Sowersby. Tony resolved to get Brendan's thoughts published as a book so Brendan could see them in print and hold them in his hand. Tony rang me and asked me to write a foreword. So here I was being asked to write a foreword for a book I'd never read by a man I'd never met who can't speak. Of course, I said yes, and am glad I did because people who are brave in the face of death give me courage...... In one of my last emails to Brendan, I referred to the title of his book - Incidentally? Vulnerable ... Mortal ... Centrally: Intensely! I wrote: "A book title is like the door you open to enter a book. The title you currently have is five doors which do not, in my mind at least, add up to a clear idea.My argument didn't get to first base. That's when I recalled another word used by friends and family to describe Brendan. Stubborn. But, then, his tone throughout our interview didn't change either - he was courteous and considered, with soft glints of humour. What would I have called his book? Stoic to the End."
