311 pages, first US edition, ex library. The book belonged top the New Cumberland Public Library, the damage limited to the preliminaries, as well as the front and back end papers. The library's bookplate in on the front paste down and its stamp at the head of the front and end papers; there is a 'discarded' stamp on the front end paper, with a second on the back paste down and a third on the title page, which also carries an accession number; the remnant of a date due slip sits on the head of the back end paper; and finally there is a short, closed tear on the head of page 311. The body of the book is clean, unmarked and solid, with lightly tanned pages. The Horse's Mouth is the third in Joyce Carey's First Trilogy, whose first two books are Herself Surprised (1941) and To Be A Pilgrim (1942).
